College of Electrical and Power Engineering

College of Electrical and Power Engineering (CEPE) can be traced back to the Electrical Engineering Major of Western Learning School (WLS) in National Shanxi Grand Academy (NSGA) in 1918. In 1931, WLS established the Department of Electrical Engineering. In 1953, the Department of Electromechanics was established by the School of Engineering when it became independent. In 1958, the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering was established by Shanxi Institute of Mining. In 1998, CEPE was established, consisting of the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Department of Thermal Engineering which belonged to Taiyuan University of Technology, as well as the Department of Electrical Engineering which belongs to Shanxi Institute of Mining. In 2017, CEPE adjusted its departments, merging the Department of Automation of the previous College of Information Engineering.

As an engineering college, the main parts of CEPE are electrical engineering, power engineering and automation, consisting of Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Thermal Engineering, Department of Automation, Teaching Department of Basic Electrical Engineering and Teaching Experimental Center. At present, CEPE has three undergraduate programs, including Electrical Engineering and Automation, Energy and Power Engineering, and Automation. Among them, Electrical Engineering and Automation is an advantage characteristic specialty in Shanxi Province and it is accredited by China Engineering Education, Automation is a brand specialty in Shanxi Province, and Energy and Power Engineering is a characteristic specialty in Shanxi Province. CEPE has established the ‘Shanxi Teaching Demonstration Center of Energy and Electrical Experiment’, ‘Shanxi Teaching Center of Energy and Electrical Virtual Simulation Experiment’, College of Electrical and Power Engineering and ‘Basic demonstration laboratory of Undergraduate Universities in Shanxi’. On the Mooc, CEPE shares excellent courses and resources including Electrical and Electronic Technology, Principle of Automatic Control and Computer Simulation Technology. CEPE has a first-level-discipline doctoral program of electrical engineering and postdoctoral mobile station, a first-level-discipline master program of power engineering and engineering thermo physics, and a first-level discipline master program of control science and engineering. CEPE also has a national and local joint engineering laboratory of ‘Mining Intelligent Electrical Technology’; three key laboratories of Shanxi, including the ‘Electrical Equipment And Intelligent Control Of Coal Mine’, ‘Operation and Control of Power System’, and ‘Efficient and Clean Combustion and Utilization of Circulating Fluidized Bed’; ‘Smart Grid’ which is the key laboratory of Shanxi universities; two Shanxi research centers of engineering technology, including the ‘Monitoring and Control of Thermal Power Saving Optimization in Shanxi ‘ and ‘Electric Drive and Internet of Things’; three Shanxi science and technology innovation teams, including the ‘Mine Digital Technology and Equipment’, ‘Wind Power Generation Control and Smart Grid’, ‘Energy Saving Fluidized Bed Boiler and Waste Heat Utilization Technology’; ‘Coal Mine Safety Technology’ which is an excellent innovation team of colleges and universities in Shanxi; ‘Energy and Electrical Engineering’ which is a provincial service industry innovation discipline group and construction plan discipline group; CEPE has two education innovation centers in the field of electrical engineering and thermal engineering in Shanxi.

With a long history, CEPE has an excellent group of faculty and staff. Currently, CEPE has 162 faculty members, including 127 teaching staff where 76% of them have doctor’s degrees. Among the teaching staff, 66 are professors and associate professors, and 17 of them are doctoral supervisors. At present, the college has one Special Allowance Expert of the State Council, two ‘131’ Leading Talents of Colleges and Universities in Shanxi, three candidates of academician, one ‘Sanjin Scholar’ in Shanxi, one leading talent of emerging industries in Shanxi, two young and middle-aged innovative talents in all colleges and universities in Shanxi, two academic and technical leaders in Shanxi, six famous teachers in Shanxi, one national advanced worker, one talent with the national ‘May 1st’ labor medal, one talent with the title of national model teacher, and one latent with the title of Shanxi model teacher. With these excellent staff, CEPE has formed a teaching and scientific research team with reasonable knowledge, age, academic background and the structure of professional title. Currently, the college has undertaken more than 20 national level projects, including the national science and technology support program of China, international cooperation in science and technology, National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc., more than 80 provincial level projects, and more than 90 horizontal research and design projects, with the average scientific research fund of 15 million RMB per year. In recent years, CEPE has a great number of scientific research achievements, including 1 second prize of national science and technology progress award; 4 first prize, 7 second prize and 4 third prize of Shanxi Province Science and technology progress; 18 publications (textbooks); more than 90authorized invention patents and software copyrights; more than 700 academic papers, where more than 140 of them are included by SCI and EI. CEPE has established long-term and stable cooperation with State Grid Shanxi Electric Power Company, Jincheng Coal Industry Cooperation, Zhongyuan Explosion proof Electric Appliance Co., Ltd., Shanxi Keda Automatic Control Technology Co., Ltd., Shanxi Fenxi Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., Guodian Power Datong Power Generation Co., Ltd., Shandong Weiqiao Aluminum Power Co., Ltd., etc.

At present, CEPE has 2244 undergraduates, 225 academic postgraduates, 234 professional postgraduates and 26 doctoral postgraduates. A solid foundation of running a school, the advanced experimental equipment and a stable teaching experimental base can not only provide students with necessary experimental conditions and training places for learning, but also help to cultivate and improve the innovative awareness and practical ability of students. The college has the ‘Scholarship of Electrical Engineering Education’, ‘Scholarship of Fenxi Heavy Industry Science and Technology Innovation’, ‘Scholarship of Taiyuan Boiler Postgraduate Science and Technology Innovation’, ‘Yuangong Electric Scholarship’ and ‘Scholarship of Thermal Alumni’, to reward outstanding students with the excellent quality and innovative ability. Aiming to directly serve the energy industries such as electrical engineering and coal, as well as the fields of electrical machinery, high voltage and IT, CEPE has cultivated a great number of excellent engineering and technical talents for the national economic construction of China and gained a high social reputation. In recent years, the employment rate of graduates of the college has been in the forefront of the schools.

Electrical Engineering and Automation

Program Objectives:students are trained to be the senior talents to adapt to the economic, social and technological development with an international vision and good humanities. With the basic theory and professional knowledge of electrical engineering, they should be capable of working in the field of electrical engineering and automation, and other relevant fields such as power systems, equipment manufacturing and mine electrical engineering, taking up the research and design of relevant products, engineering design, system operation,project management, teaching and scientific research, with capability to solve the complex engineering problems in the electrical engineering and to undertake important responsibilities as individuals or as team members.

5 years after graduation, the graduates are expected to obtain:

1. Ability to adapt to the social development and have a strong sense of responsibility in work;

2. Ability to solve practical engineering problems related to job positions by applying the learned professional knowledge;

3. Ability to adapt to the working environment as an individual or as a group member in different job positions;

4. Ability to promote career development through lifelong learning, having a strong competitiveness in the field of electrical engineering;

【Energy and Power Engineering】

Program Objectives:students are trained to be the senior talents who master the basic theory in the field of Energy and Power Engineering, the courage and ability to innovate, explore and solve engineering problems, the ability to communicate effectively and coordinate in team works, the international vision, excellent humanities and the scientific literacy. They should be competent for the theoretical research, engineering design, system operation, manufacturing and installation, application development and engineering management in the field of Energy and Power Engineering, to meet the requirements of the social demand for high-level talents in energy and power engineering, and related fields.

5 years after graduation, the graduates are expected to have:

1. Good humanities and social scientific literacy, a strong sense of social responsibility and favorable engineering professional ethics;

2. Ability to solve practical engineering problems by applying the learned basic theory and professional knowledge;

3. Ability to communicate effectively, work collaboratively and adapt to working environment

as an individual or as a group member;

4. Ability to adapt to the social development with the awareness of lifelong learning, being competitive in the field of Energy and Power Engineering;

5. Ability to communicate and cooperate with domestic and international professional audiences with an international vision;

Program Objectives:students are trained to the senior talents in the field of engineering and management with the good personality, professional quality, innovative spirit and international vision. Students should have the skills of automation and the basic theory of principles of automatic control, electronics, computer technology, testing technology and other relevant fields, engaged in the research, design, operation, optimization, maintenance and other works, to satisfy the requirement of automation systems in all sectors of the national economy.

5 years after graduation, the graduates are expected to have:

1. Ability to adapt to the social development and a strong sense of responsibility in different job positions;

2. Ability to solve complex engineering problems in the profession by applying the learned professional knowledge;

3. Ability to adapt to the working environment as an individual or a group member in different job positions and the potential to be leaders;

4. Awareness of lifelong learning, being competitive in the field of control engineering;

5. Ability and awareness to contribute to the society.
